Hypnotherapy is the process of being hypnotised or being taken into a trance state. Trance is a natural experience we all have, or have had at some time of our lives. Classic examples of being in a trance are driving somewhere and arriving and having almost no recollection of the journey, or it is similar to when we daydream whilst being in a lecture or classroom.
Even reading a paragraph in a book and then having to reread it as we’ve forgotten what it said. Hypnotherapy involves a co-operation or sharing of ideas whilst in the trance state induced by the Hypnotherapist. The ideas explored in Hypnotherapy may take the form of ways to relax and take a new perspective on past events or future concerns. The mind becomes more creative in trance states and the state of hypnosis allows a clearer communication between Conscious mind and Unconscious mind, therefore enabling both to work together on resolving a problem.
Most people are fully aware when in a trance and can have a heightened sense of awareness in fact. People experience the trance state as generally relaxing and refreshing if not energising.
Most people will remember what has happened whilst in a trance as it’s not like it appears in TV Shows or Stage Shows. No one will do anything under hypnosis that’s against their wishes or against their morals. No one as yet has ever gone into a trance and stayed there forever! It is a safe experience and can go deeper than most therapies as it utilises the unconscious and doesn’t rely on just the conscious mind and normal everyday problem solving. The best hypnotic subjects are intelligent and imaginative so there’s no gullibility or control element to Hypnotherapy.
Sometimes a client is regressed to an early age and can remember events long forgotten in quite some detail, this is one reason hypnosis has been used with Police witnesses to access information from events that they were present at, but perhaps bystanders to. Great detail can be retrieved, for example a car number plate out of the corner of someone’s vision that they had no conscious recollection of. Hypnotherapy has been around in various forms for hundreds of years, and has been used in medical settings whereby a tooth can be extracted painlessly or even an amputation performed with no pain and with generally a faster recovery time then under conventional anaesthesia.
Hypnotherapy has been employed by many sports coaches and performers as a way of generating the right mind set or winning attitude.
