Mark Knowles BSc (Hons) ITEC MMCA GCC Registered, Doctor of Chiropractic
Mark’s interest in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) therapies began over 25 years prior to graduating as a Doctor of Chiropractic. His former years were spent in the construction industry as a carpenter, where he experienced a large variety of strained muscles from lifting incorrectly, aches and pains associated with poor posture, and even the odd accidental injury such as torn ligaments were experienced during his time in this industry.
These life experiences have been invaluable in helping Mark to understand the discomfort many of his patients are presenting to him on a daily basis. The change from construction industry to health care may seem a monumental jump but when you think of the principles involved; such as the study of structure and mechanics this may not appear as such a diverse change of direction. During his 5 ½ yrs studying McTimoney chiropractic a great deal of time was spent studying Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics, Biochemistry and Neurology to produce a comprehensive understanding of what makes us tick.
During his formative years, Mark sought the help of various modalities of health care such as acupuncture, massage, osteopathy, physiotherapy, craniosacral therapy and chiropractic. It was after a chiropractic treatment from a McTimoney Chiropractor that his life was to change. As with all therapies that work, finding the one that works best for you is essential, and for Mark this was McTimoney Chiropractic. After returning to work and considering the training, Mark decided to train to become a McTimoney Chiropractor – the experience of which has been both incredibly challenging and unbelievably rewarding. Mark now enjoys working with probably one of the most complex pieces of engineering on the planet, You!
Whilst studying at the Mc Timoney College of Chiropractic in Abingdon, Oxfordshire Mark was also trained in Trigger Point Therapy, Integrator Technique and he additionally studied to complete an ITEC diploma in Holistic Massage.
Mark decided to take the plunge in early 2009, and set up his own company:Riverwood Chiropractic Ltd. He works as a full-time therapist, and is a valued member of the team at The Complementary Health Care Clinic – having been headhunted in early 2008!
A little bit about consultations & appointments…
New Patients will be required to have a New Patient Full Consultation on their first visit.
This normally takes approximately 1 ½ hrs and includes;
- Detailed description of presenting condition.
- Detailed Patient history taken (this includes details of medication taken/ past or present injuries – illnesses) there may be relevant events as far back as a patients own birth.
- Checking vital signs. (blood pressure/temperature etc)
- Cranial Nerve Testing.
- Cardiovascular, Respiratory, and Abdominal Screening.
- Neurological and Orthopaedic testing.
Consultations may be tailored to facilitate full testing of symptoms if necessary.
Treatment following a new patient consultation may be given depending on the findings of the consultation. This will be at the discretion of the Chiropractor. There may be a need to refer you back to your GP to get permission to treat, to clarify details or even request further investigation.
Postural analysis is another aspect of chiropractic that will be ongoing during your consultations, as it is essential for your chiropractor to know not only what you do, but also how you do it. It may be recommended that changes are made regarding postural habits or working practices and it is beneficial for patients to participate in the healing process.
“Chiropractic, you do backs don’t you?”
This is a familiar response when talking to someone who has never experienced chiropractic and the answer to the question is yes your McTimoney chiropractor can treat your back but essentially we treat you….and that’s all of you, from head to toe.
Wellness Care
Chiropractic is not just for those with painful symptoms. One of the body’s natural responses to misalignment is compensation and this may not produce painful symptoms, however compensation frequently causes a compromise in performance.
Prevention is better than cure and Mark has found maintaining natural balance and posture has helped many people to improve their performance in sports, such as horse riding, golf, football and general daily activities.

Testimonials
My name is Louise Page and I have been suffering with persistent shoulder, back and neck pain since experiencing a car accident in 2004. Since then I have had countless treatments for the shoulder injury including three operations and numerous other therapies.
In May 2009 I made an appointment to see Mark as the pain I was suffering had worsened and I was in a lot of discomfort. Right from the start I was extremely impressed with Marks thoroughness and obviously excellent subject knowledge and I was amazed by how he seemed to hit the nail on the head every time when identifying and diagnosing my symptoms.
He performed a series of painless and very gentle adjustments and has given me a great deal of useful advice regarding both my posture and lifestyle. I have seen Mark less than half a dozen times since then and each time I have come away with greatly reduced levels of pain and discomfort. I can honestly say that in 5 years of treatments, nothing else has come close to being as effective as the treatments I have had with him and I would recommend him to you unreservedly.
I feel better than I have done in years!
