Andrew has practised as a medical herbalist since 1986, qualifying from the School of Herbal Medicine and then joining the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (www.nimh.org.uk). Over the years, he has treated a broad range of health problems and believes that the starting point is always to treat the ‘person with the condition’ rather than the ‘condition’ itself. Andrew’s experience is that herbal medicine is a key resource for those looking to treat illness and regain vitality using natural means, and that by working with body and mind (and perhaps soul too), major improvements in health become possible. Yes, herbal tinctures can taste very bitter, but it’s a small price to pay.
Herbal extracts make potent medicines, able to produce significant health benefits, however it is important to recognise that they are allies that help one ‘walk the path’ towards good health – they cannot walk the path for you! Things such as a sound diet, adequate sleep and rest, exercise, relaxation and a positive attitude are the building blocks that lay the foundations for the return to good health. Attention – in a realistic, manageable way – to these areas of one’s life is an essential part of the herbal approach to health. Herbal medicines can then be used to treat specific issues such as a compromised immune system, digestive weakness or chronic anxiety. Such an approach can produce rapid results if the person is basically healthy, though it is more common that improvement occurs gradually week by week.
As well as providing herbal treatment, Andrew is a trained healer and offers healing as part of his practice.
Andrew is a fellow and past-president of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, and a member of the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy.
He has written several books on herbal medicine including the Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine, Herbal First Aid, Herbal Medicine for the Menopause, and his most recent; Herbal Remedies – a DK Eyewitness guide.
Previous experience includes working in an NHS-funded complementary health clinic offering free treatment to over-55s in east London
He worked for 10 years as a Senior Lecturer in Herbal Medicine at Middlesex University, London
