What is Reflexology?
In a nutshell, reflexology is a form of acupressure massage performed mainly on the feet.
Foot massage has been practised for thousands of years in different cultures around the world. Modern reflexology is based on the works of Dr William Fitzgerald and his practise of zone therapy, which focuses on reflex responses and anaesthesia. He was able to show that by applying pressure to a ‘zone’ you can bring about physiological functioning in all parts of the zone treated.
A physiotherapist who worked closely with Dr Fitzgerald went on to develop the first reflexology foot chart, which maps out the location of organs, glands and other areas of the body onto the feet.
How does it work?
Congestion and tension in areas of the body is mirrored in the feet, which allows for symptoms and cause to be treated in a natural and non-invasive way. This makes reflexology a safe treatment that is suitable for most.
Your therapist will apply finger pressure to access these different areas, and will be looking at the colour and texture of the feet as well as uric acid deposits and tender spots. These are all indicators of imbalance. By removing uric acid deposit we allow the blood to circulate freely without obstructions, improving the blood supply to that organ.
What is it good for?
Most find a reflexology session to be deeply relaxing making it very effective at reducing stress levels, helping related conditions and allowing the whole body to function better. It is well documented that stress inhibits the immune system, so regular sessions may help to sustain and strengthen immune levels and wellbeing. Reflexology aids the self healing process and works on both physical and therapeutic levels. Nerve, blood and lymph systems are invigorated and positively affected.
Some conditions that reflexology can benefit include stress, anxiety, depression, headaches, migraines, arthritis, back pain, digestive disorders, infertility, menstrual and menopausal problems.
What happens during a treatment?
Your first session will include a detailed consultation including medical history to determine the aims of the sessions.
You will then be asked to kick your shoes and socks off and relax! Your therapist will start with a relaxing foot massage and then proceed with the reflexology.
Sessions usually last 60 minutes, however after your first full length session 30 minutes sessions may be appropriate. However you can book for anything up to 90 minutes.
Please note that if you have a young child or baby that you think would be able to sit quietly for your session, we are more than happy to accommodate for this.
Our therapists normally use natural, organic where possible, non-animal tested products which are usually hand made.
