This month has been very interesting from a homeopathic perspective – I have experienced the miracle of Homeopathy first hand with one of our kittens!
Little Owen decided at the age of 5 weeks to try to fly and jumped from the landing to the hall floor – resulting in a fractured skull, badly smashed ankle and possible brain damage.
Rushed to the Vet pausing only to give frequent doses of Arnica Montana 200c (on soft sac lac -suitable for children & animals as it dissolves instantly ). On arrival he was examined, put under observation, given conventional treatment of steroids to reduce brain swelling and x-rayed. We were told the outlook was very poor as he was disorientated and un-coordinated. Thankfully he survived the night but with almost no improvement which was indicative of brain damage and we expected the worst.
Owen was transferred to our own Vet early the next morning – at which point I took advantage of the opportunity to again give as many doses of Arnica during the course of the journey as possible. He had a bizarre response – with a minute he stopped shrieking and flapping around and fell asleep. Bumps and sudden movements woke him up again but on giving him more of the remedy, the same response was observed. Despite feeling frazzled and extremely anxious I have to admit to being fascinated by this – and could only hope that pain was being relieved by the remedy. The following morning he was up and awake, the brain swelling had substantially improved and he continued to get better. Our vet took the approach that anything which might help could be used and added Arnica Montana to the treatment sheet and he was religiously given 3 doses a day. We changed the prescription to add in Hypericum to help to heal the nerve damage and because we weren’t sure if he was able to see and appeared very “down” Natricum Sulphur was also included for its affinity with depression problems linked to head injury. Again, the response on taking the first dose was immediate – Owen went from trying to remove my finger (with extremely sharp teeth!) to sprawling out full length and falling asleep within a matter of minutes. This despite all previous visits when he stayed awake and mewled pitifully when I left. I was also informed that when he did sleep it was usually in a tight little ball in the corner of the cage so it was very pleasing that he relaxed so well following being medicated.
Thankfully Owen is now running around with his brother and sister, and apart from no longer being the big bruiser he was two weeks ago and a slightly discernable stiffness in one leg he is amazingly better! All that remains from the fractured skull and brain injury/concussion is a small lump on his noggin, and a tendency to run headlong into things at top speed when playing “tag” !
I always like to look at both sides, and can clearly see that the sceptics among us would believe that Homeopathy did not play a part here – but with an animal, how can one possibly think placebo effect? I truly do believe that in this instance we had our own little miracle – and that at the point where it was life threatening, a natural remedy made the crucial difference.
