Jan de Vries is a name that has been synonymous with expert complementary healthcare for over 40 years. When Dr Jan de Vries graduated in pharmacy in 1958, he thought that homeopathy was for “old wifey sorts, spinsters and vegetarians”. Forty-Seven years later, Dr Jan is one of the most renowned and well-respected naturopaths in his field. The conversion came when he happened to be seated next to Dr Alfred Vogel, a professor in homeopathy at a meeting in Amsterdam. (Dr A.Vogel pioneered Bioforce (now rebranded as A.Vogel), a company internationally well known for the qualities of their herbal tinctures). “We didn’t know each other’, says Dr Jan. ‘In the break he said to me ‘what do you know about homeopathy?’ I said ‘nothing’ and he said ‘do you believe in it?’ I said ‘no, I’m in pharmacy I’ve just come out as the best graduate of the year’. He then said to me ‘you must have a very small mind’. He told me all about it and I was so intrigued that two months later I went to Switzerland and he converted me. I’m still in it today.”
As well as receiving many awards over the years, Jan de Vries has most recently been made an Honorary Professor of Edinburgh’s Queen Margaret University College. His future aims and objectives are to develop the philosophies and education of complementary therapies with the students of the University, while establishing a leading complementary healthcare library of international importance.
